Live Music: Farris Hallaj
Farris Hallaj is a recent graduate of Longwood University in Farmville, Virginia. He earned a Bachelor of Arts in Music, with a concentration in Voice. He was born with a birth defect, Optic Nerve Hypoplasia, and is visually impaired but this has never slowed him down. He has strong musical energy and has been studying music since he was 5 years old. The first instrument he played was piano and quickly moved into vocal training.
Currently, Farris is attending the Virginia Rehabilitation Center for the Blind and Visually Impaired in Richmond, VA to work on his independent skills as he moves into his adult life. He has composed and collaborated on several original songs. He is working on getting his voice heard by posting on his YouTube Channel, performing at local venues, and hopes to record his original songs in the near future. He recently learned how to play the ukulele and is excited to add that into his list of instruments. In addition, he is continuing his love for music by volunteering with the Franklin Park Arts Center, and has worked as a mentor for A Place To Be camps, helping campers learn how to play instruments and learn songs for their performances.
Over the past 19 years, Farris has studied piano, voice, drums, bass, guitar, violin, clarinet, and saxophone. Throughout his college career, he worked on classical pieces and strengthened his vocal range. He was the 2015 Crowd Choice winner for Longwood’s Got Talent, performing an original piece. During his middle and high school years he performed in many county and district chorus groups. In addition, in his senior year he auditioned and was selected to perform at Carnegie Hall with the All American Honors Performance Choir. He was a member of the band, Canis Cibus, during his high school years. He played the bass and sang backup vocals for the band. They performed at many venues, to include YouthFest, Bluemont Fair, Lovettsville Fair, Lucketts Fair, and other local venues.
This performance at North Gate will be a great opportunity for Farris's voice to be heard by other people. Some of his originals will be played along with some covers of his favorite artists. He is really looking forward to it, and is excited that he got the opportunity
